夜已阑，天上的星星醒着。窗外的池塘里的西北角上，有一只老蛙发出“呱……呱……呱……”的叫声，声音沉厚，像发自丹田，亦像非洲酋长沉郁的不可违抗的指令。约莫沉寂了二分钟，老蛙的对面便有三、两只青蛙，“呱呱，呱呱，呱呱……”地发出应和。又是一阵沉寂，什么声音都没有了，隐隐地感觉得到遥远的田野上，有虫们的轰鸣。突然，几乎同时响起，满池塘蛙声如织，象一首生命变奏大合唱。五分钟左右，一切寂没。只有自己的心房在“乓哒，乓哒”地搏动。再过几分钟，蛙们又开始了下一轮的演奏。那一晚，我失眠了，但我并不痛苦。我在想，生命的诞生就像一场缘定三生的邂逅，任何人无法预设，也无法选择。在自然界中，一切生命都有他自己的秩序，一切的生命都会在上苍的安排之下轮回。

Late in the night, with stars lighting up the sky sporadically, in the corner of the pond outside, a frog croaked deeply. It felt so much like a sound emanating from the Dantian, or an irresistible order bellowed by an African tribal chief. After about two minutes of silence, two or three frogs on the other side responded enthusiastically with their intermittent “croak, croak, croak…” A period of silence followed, in which you could faintly discern the singing of insects from the fields afar. Suddenly, almost in unison, the croaking began again leading to a crescendo, much like the variations in the chorus of life. And then, five minutes later, silence reigned supreme, and you could hear your heart beating. After several minutes, the frogs commenced another round of performance.

I suffered from insomnia that night, but I felt no pain. I thought that the birth of a life was just like a fateful encounter, which one could not decide or select. There is order among all living things in nature, and they will be reincarnated as per God’s will.

我不知道蛙们是否失眠，我不知道，除人类以外的其他动物是否也如同人类一样失眠。但我知道，失眠是人类共有的特质，它不分人种，不分男女，不论富贵与贫穷，不论尊卑与长幼，失眠可以是因为身体的不适，但更多的源自心理的忧患，情绪的亢奋，处境的无奈和对未来的困惑与迷茫。而且，失眠往往带上人性和命运的终极价值的纠缠。譬如：“哲学就是怀着一种乡愁的冲动到处去寻找家园”。这种超越肉体意义上的精神失眠，有时会转变为一种艺术创作的冲动。因此，便有了我笔下的“失眠者”，面对现实的无奈、困惑和迷茫的眼神，还有因失眠而扭曲的面孔。

I don’t know if frogs or other animals can suffer from insomnia or not, but I do know that insomnia is common among humans, regardless of race, gender, wealth, position or age. Insomnia may be caused by illness, but often it also occurs due to worry, excitement, and helplessness in the face of a negative environment, and sometimes because we are puzzled or bewildered when we imagine our future. For example, “Philosophy is about seeking one’s home while being imbued in nostalgia.” Such insomnia that lies beyond physical senses of the human body can sometimes be converted into an impulse, leading to artistic creation. This is why I created Insomniac. It brings to life the helpless, perplexed and bewildered eyes, whose distorted face due to insomnia is etched in my consciousness.

而失眠者眼前那一抹钴蓝，即是一种具有符号意义的标识，也是一抹具有神经质般痉挛的忧伤和神秘……

The touch of cobalt blue in the insomniac’s eyes, symbolizes their grief and mystery, but is also not too far removed from a nervous spasm.
